We all have a story to tell; we all have a memoir to write. The journey to authentic leadership is built upon the foundation of self-awareness. But self-awareness is not discovered within an institutional workshop, course or classroom. Nature is the classroom and life is the course. The workshop is a daily dose of experiencing life within the context of purpose, values and relationships.

Published in December 2023, Coffee Smoke is my first published book in a series of memoirs, taking me back to early days as a public servant. Serving Indigenous peoples, I had to take the difficult journey of unlearning as I removed my preconceived notions that were steeped in the tea of the privilege I experienced as a third generation settler on this land.

As an aspiring your leader at the time, I relearned humility, servitude and the art of listening first so I could understand the true nature of those whom I served. With the guidance of Elders, my eyes were opened to the differences between religion and spirituality; belief and belonging.

Coming soon: Thresholds

The veil between this physical life and what lies beyond is often thinner than we perceive. Edgewalkers know the nature of this veil, even if we are not aware of it. We feel it when we walk in a room. We sense it when we walk down a path. We acknowledge it every time we trust our instincts. Although unseen, the spiritual realm is often a path where Edgewalkers feel comfortable.

Thresholds is a deeper dive into personal experiences of dancing along the veil between worlds, where Edgewalkers dare to tread. It is based upon experiences that have led me into the depths of self-awareness and a place of silence where I open my ears and feelings to the spiritual hum that serves as a foundation for all life and creation as we know it.

Coming soon: Step to the Edge: Unlearning Leadership

I know what you’re thinking. You want to tell me, “Donovan, do we really need another leadership book?” My question back is, when is the last time you read a book that is solely based upon the stories of leadership from the corporate trenches?

Step to the Edge is a reflective narrative from some of the trailblazing grassroots leaders I am fortunate enough to call my friends and mentors. They often masquerade as practitioners, scaffolders and encouragers from wherever they are in their organizations. They may also often sacrifice their own advancements for the sake of advancing others. They are servants, coaches, mentors and doers. They are leaders who step to the edge and practice their craft in ways that have required active unlearning of everything they were told when aspiring to be part of something bigger than themselves.
